Summer Sangria!

Summer is here, and that can only mean one thing… It’s sangria time!

There’s nothing I love more than putting on some shades and basking in the sun with a cool glass of sangria in my hand and a cat on my lap. The refreshing fizz and natural sweetness make sangria the perfect drink for any warm-weather activity, and there’s something so essentially “summer” about melding the flavors of wine, citrus, fruit, and a bit of sparkle.

The things I love most about sangria are:

  • It’s extremely versatile
  • It can be campfire-ready, or classy enough for a four-course meal
  • An opened wine bottle can easily find new life with some key ingredients
  • It produces boozy fruit, my favorite food group!


Now, making sangria can truly be as easy or as complex as you want it to be. Traditionally made with red wine, brandy, and citrus, sangria was popular in Europe for centuries before making it to the US in 1964 during the World’s Fair in New York. The variations on the classic are endless, but the easiest and most playful recipes for sangria go something like this:

[your favorite wine] + [your favorite fruits] + [something fizzy] = SANGRIA

I highly recommend grabbing some items around the kitchen and having a sangria-making afternoon. Mixing sangria is all about finding the proportions and quantities that you like best. FYI, lots of taste testing is required.

However, I understand some people still like following recipes, so just because it’s warm out and I’m in a sharing mood, I’m going to let you in on some step-by-step instructions for a few of my favorite no-fuss sangrias.


Easy Outdoor Sangria
This recipe is perfect for traveling, whether it’s to the beach, on a camping trip, or just to your backyard.

Start with:
Boxed red wine, like Carmina Luna or La Vielle Ferme Red (both 3L for $20 at Wine World & Spirits)
Sunkist, Sprite, or other citrus soda

Add in:
Mini bottle of vodka, like Kurant Crystal Vodka (50ml for $6.25 at Wine World & Spirits)
Any fruit you have handy!
Cinnamon sticks

Mix and serve chilled or with ice.

Easy Outdoor Sangria is great because the ingredients can be mixed directly into a cup, and the containers can be thrown around at a campsite without worrying about breakage. Safe and delicious!


Pride Fest Sangria
In honor of Pride Month this June, we’re getting festive with all the colors of the rainbow in this fabulous sangria.

Start with:
Sparkling white wine, like Vega Medien Brut ($9 at Wine World & Spirits)
Peach liqueur, like Rothman & Winter Orchard Peach Liqueur ($25 at Wine World & Spirits)

Add in:
Strawberries (6, quartered)
Nectarine (1, cut into chunks)
Kiwi (3, cut into chunks)
Blueberries (about one handful)
Cinnamon sticks

Pro tip: Freeze your fruit first for a lasting chill!

Garnish with:
Orange wedge
