Gluten Free Whisky – Queen Jennie Sorghum

Coming from Old Sugar Distillery in Madison, Wisconsin, Queen Jennie is the first whiskey available to  Washington State made from the gluten free sorghum grain.

Sorghum is a type of grass that is grown in warm climates, typically Tropic or Sub-Tropical climates, and is found on all continents with such regions. While popular in Asianic countries, the grain has seen a fairly recent jump in popularity amongst US consumers. This is largely due to sorghum being naturally gluten-free (by FDA standards). With the growing awareness of Celiac disease (gluten intolerance), many people are excluding gluten containing grains, wheat, barley and rye, from their diet.

This leads to the ongoing debate about the presence of gluten in distilled spirits. Many experts state that the act of distillation removes the harmful gluten grains as it refines the alcohol into a concentrated spirit. However, not everyone agrees. The Celiac Sprue Association does not recommend any form of Scotch or whiskey; instead, it advises those following the gluten-free diet to stick with potato vodkas, brandy, rum and tequila, all of which are made from non-gluten grain sources.

Old Sugar has devised the ultimate solution for people with sensitivity to gluten, yet want to enjoy and nice glass of whiskey when they want. Being made from 100% sorghum and produced in a facility that doesn’t handle wheat, barley or rye, Queen Jennie is the perfect answer for those who don’t want to wait on the gluten-in-spirits debate to pan out.

Queen Jennie is made from 100% Wisconsin sorghum. It is aged in small charred oak barrels from Minnesota.  Less sour than a bourbon and less harsh than a rye, Queen Jennie Sorghum Whiskey has a unique character deserving of its name. Nice sweet tones of brown sugar and vanilla develop with a soft oakiness on the finish. Certainly a unique flavor, and a pleasant addition to the best whiskey selection in Seattle at Wine World and Spirits. Still the best liquor store in Seattle to find gluten free spirits.
