What? A stunning recreation of a whisky found buried in the ice in Antarctica is now available at Wine World & Spirits, the best place in Seattle to buy Scotch in Seattle! Check out this hard to find Scotch that just came in! Mackinlay’s Blended Malt Scotch Whisky “The Enduring Spirit” is here. Richard Paterson, the Master Blender at Whyte & Mackay in Glasgow, Scotland has certainly outdone himself lately. He has masterfully scoured the whisky supplies of Scotland to make the Ernest Shackleton 1907 Recreation. The original whisky dates back to 1907 and provides for a rare glimpse into what whisky tasted like over 100 years ago! The History: Sir Ernest Shackleton was an explorer from the 19th century set on exploring the South Pole. He made three expeditions total. His most famous was his the third expedition, where he made preparations for what became the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, in 1914–17. Disaster struck this expedition when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could be landed. There followed a sequence of exploits, and an ultimate escape with no loss of human life, that would eventually assure Shackleton’s heroic status. Modern day books and even a movie have chronicled the event. More important to us whisky lovers was his second expedition dubbed the Nimrod Expedition after his ship at the time. The year was 1909 and Shackleton with three companions established a base camp at Cape Royds. It is there that they buried many of their provisions before marching towards the south pole… including several cases of brandy and scotch whisky. Their march to the pole was cut short by a shortage of food and they all barely returned back to the ship in time to sail out before the ice sheets closed them in. As they were in a serious hurry to make it out, they left their base camp and remaining provisions behind. Today, the base camp remains intact and is a historical landmark preserved by the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust (NZAHT). In 2010, NZAHT was doing restoration work on the base camp to ensure its preservation. While pulling up some of the floor boards to be replaced, they discovered three cases of Mackinlay’s Scotch Whisky that had been there undisturbed for a century. While the Mackinlay’s brand no longer exists, the parent company Whyte & Mackay still does. NZAHT gave some of the whisky to museums, auctioned some of the bottles to private collectors, and sent some of them back to Whyte & Mackay for history to be recreated. The Whisky: The first Recreation consisted of 50,000 bottles that sold out worldwide in a record setting matter of months! With such a massive response, it was dubbed the “whisky story of the century” and even National Geographic did a 60 minute special on the recreation. Given the success, NZAHT requested a second run of whisky to be produced by Whyte & Mackay. This is what resulted in “The Enduring Spirit” otherwise known as “The Journey” release. As you can see, it’s a rich whisky with nice fruity tones to the malt, a healthy oakiness and a nice little peat that compliments the whisky without dominating the flavor profile. Remember that this whisky is a Blended Malt Scotch, not a Blended Scotch. That means that only the best pure pot still, 100% malted barley whisky was used and no light grain whiskies were put into the bottle. The whisky is bottled at 47.3%. The Enduring Spirit comes in a unique straw wrapper that simulates how the bottles were individually packed when discovered. Also in the box comes a 26-page booklet telling the story of the whisky, a plan of the original base near Cape Royds, maps, a detailed timeline of the expedition, a letter from Ernest Shackleton to his wife from 1908, photographs, and diary extracts from the expedition itself. There is also a hidden bonus that you get, but you need to register your bottle with Whyte & Mackay to find out what it is! All in all, this is one of the most exclusive releases that Wine World & Spirits has received to date and is a bottle that comes with a substantial history behind it. Beyond that, proceeds from each sale go to support NZAHT with their preservation efforts. Come down to Wine World & Spirits, the best place in Seattle to buy Scotch whisky in Seattle and pick up a piece of history before they are all gone! It’s $225 plus a lot of taxes!

Discover Ardbog! The Ultimate Islay Single Malt Scotch has just released this year’s secret new whisky, and Wine World & Spirits has it in stock because we are always looking for the newest releases! Referred to simply as Ardbog, this new release went on sale worldwide starting last week. Around 200 Ardbeg Committee members gathered at the Burke Museum to be present for the unveiling. They searched the museum for hidden coins and treasures to trade in for Ardbeg Day shirts, pins, etc. and got to enjoy a tasting of the already popular Uigeadail and Corryvreckan before being amongst the first in the world to try the new Ardbog. Why the Burke Museum? It was a fitting setting for the archeological theme surrounding the whisky. Ardbeg tells of the historical treasures unearthed on Islay by digging into the peat bogs. Arrow heads, gold brooches, coins and even a 3000 year old bronze sword have been discovered thanks to the pursuit of peaty whisky. Running with this idea of heritage and archeological discovery, Ardbeg has come up with the new tagline “We all dig Ardbog!” Okay, okay… onto the whisky itself. Ardbog is a limited edition release (roughly 240 bottles allowed into Washington) to celebrate Ardbeg Day, which is June 1st around the world. The whisky is a marriage of Ardbeg matured in two different cask types. The raitio is 60% bourbon cask and 40% 10yr old ex-Manzanilla Sherry casks from Spain. All of the whisky has matured for at least 10yrs, though the Ardbog bears no age statement. Ardbog is non chill-filtered and bottled at 52.1%ABV. For flavor, you definitely get plenty of the signature Ardbeg peatiness. Most notable notes to compliment the peat are salty tones that get softened with a subtle sweetness from the Manzanilla casks. Not nearly as sweet as the Galileo release from last year though. In the words of Ardbeg’s Dr. Bill Lumsden himself: “At its heart our hallmark smoky yet fruity and floral spirit has been matured in Spanish ex-Manzanilla sherry casks for ten years, which has then been wrapped with traditional Ardbeg of the same age that is matured in American ex-bourbon oak casks. The Manzanilla maturation weaves salty flavours through the whisky which is then balanced with the maple syrup creaminess of the first-fill ex-bourbon casks.” This Scotch whisky surely won’t last long, so come by and pick some up while you can. We don’t just carry the same items all year around, we will bring in anything we can get! Wine World and Spirits is the best store in Seattle to shop for scotch, so you know that if it’s anywhere, you can find it here.

El Dorado Rum is back to Washington! Many people have been asking “where’s the El Dorado?” Well now it’s finally at Wine World & Spirits in Seattle! The answer is complicated, but the short of the story (as I understand it) is that some sort of importation issue had caused major shortages nationwide. The good news is that the problem has been fixed and the most diverse range of Demerara Rum from Guyana is once again back on the shelves. With 70 awards under their belt in the last decade alone, Demerara Distillers Ltd, the producers of El Dorado, have become world renowned for their high quality. Confusion abounds about the word “demerara.” It is large grain sugar that is formed during the first crystallization of the sugar refinement process, and (should) originate from Guyana. It often gets confused with brown sugar (which is simply white sugar with a little molasses added) but is considered by most to be superior due to its richer, caramel-like flavor. Today, demerara sugar is produced in Mexico, India, and Hawaii, USA, among other countries, but Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) is fighting to define the term as a product distinct to Guyana. While the effort continues for the sugar industry, in the world of rum, they have been successful and they are the only rum producers allowed to produce rum with the demerara descriptor. Champagne must come from France, Right? Well Demerara Rum must come from Guyana! The El Dorado range includes a 3yr white, 6yr deluxe white, Spiced Rum, 5yr dark, 8yr dark, 12yr Finest, 15yr Special Reserve and the ever elusive 21yr Special Reserve. Such a spectrum means that there is an option for everyone. Whether you call it Rum, Rhum or Ron… make Mojitos, Cuba Libres or prefer a rich, flavorful, smooth tipple to sip on… El Dorado is definitely a line worth exploring. And Wine World & Spirits carries all of these and more – we strive hard to have the best spirits and the best rum selection in Seattle! John Slagle Spirits Specialist

Bruichladdich 21yr Cuvee Series Bruichladdich Master Distiller Jim McEwan is at it again with another exploration into the myriad nuances of cask finishing Scotch Whisky. A genius to some and a mad scientist to others, Mr. McEwan is well known for thinking outside of the box and breaking from tradition to truly explore the boundaries of Scotch Whisky. This time, he has released 3 unique whiskies in what is known as the Bruichladdich Cuvee Series. Each whisky has been primarily matured in American Oak before receiving a cask finish in Sauternes/Barsac, Pedro Ximenez or Cognac casks. While cask finishing is a common technique in Scotland, rarely is it used on whiskies so old. Especially not in a trio of releases. Because of that, there are VERY few bottles to go around. While I don’t know how many were produced in total, I do know that there were only 30 bottles of each that managed their way into the Pacific Northwest (Including Alaska and Montana!). Luckily, we here at Wine World and Spirits managed to get a few of each. If you’d like to try some of these very rare offerings, come check them out now before they’re gone forever. From http://www.bruichladdich.com/news/whisky-releases/the-cuvees: Cuvee 382: La Berenice (Sauternes/Barsac Cask) This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in casks that previously contained the lush sweet white wines of two of the greatest chateaux of Barsac and Sauternes. Casks that have held wine from grapes grown to honeyed intensity from some of the most blessed plots of Bordeaux now meet classic Bruichladdich spirit that has slumbered in our dank, dark loch-side warehouses for two decades. Elegant vanilla from the white oak, the honeyed fruit of the wine, the toasted malt of the barley, the floral elegance of the spirit produced by our long-necked Victorian stills and the fresh tang of salt laden Atlantic winds here produce a sensuous, decadent and flirtatious whisky, with more than a hint of forbidden fruit. Cuvee 407: PX (Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask) This Cuvee 407 has been further matured in rare Jerez butts that for decades held unctuous and ultra-rich sherry, made from the Moorish Pedro Ximenez grape. Once harvested, the grapes are shriveled to a raisin-like state under the baking sun of Andalucia to concentrate the sugars, resulting in a sweet wine of legendary viscosity and intensity. For centuries, PX casks have been revered by whisky distillers for the Madeira cake richness they bring to maturing spirit; and our casks, extracted from the Fernando de Castilla Solera, are of the very highest provenance. This Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 is an indulgent, licentious whisky, a whisky for when the air is redolent of old leather, Cuban tobacco and cedarwood. A whisky to lose oneself in – an indulgent dream of a dram. Cuvee 640: Eroica (Cognac Cask) Cuvee 640 has been further matured in Limousin oak casks from Aquitaine that for many years contained one of the great eaux de vie. These casks tannins have added new layers of rich complexity to our own elegant, floral Bruichladdich. This is a spirit to give pause, to reflect on. A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate. This profound, challenging whisky jealously guards its secrets from the uninitiated, but to those with patience and curiosity it reveals layer upon layer of subtle nuance, from Turkish Delight and wild strawberry, to darker notes of dark chocolate orange and espresso. To be enjoyed at the end of a great meal or a great day, alone or with a small cadre of like-minded Argonauts. Post by John Slangle, our Spirits Enthusiast
